Water Filtration

Water filtration primarily involves the removal of impurities and contaminants by passing water through a porous medium or a series of filters.

Water filter systems can generally be for removal of contaminants, or for changing the properties of water:

  • Under-sink water filter systems for single outlets (usually a filter tap or integrated into a mixer-tap)
  • Whole house filtration systems, for complete home filtration
  • Remineralising, softening (ion exchange) or changing the alkalinity of water
  • Disinfecting water.

Main methods of filtration used in Freshwater Systems water filters for home, small business or caravans include:

  • Particle filtration – pleated, poly-spun filters for sediment removal and pre-filtration
  • Carbon filtration – granular or carbon block filter
  • Membrane filtration – reverse osmosis, for removal of 98% of contaminants including those otherwise treated by particle filtration, carbon filtration and disinfection
  • Ion exchange – or the changing out of hard mineral molecules in water, in water softening process
  • pH modification – generally for making water more alkaline for health reasons.

Carbon filters for cholorine, chloramine and tannin removal

Carbon filtration is primarily used to reduce the amount of fine particles, chorine and other chemicals in water. This improves taste, smell and clarity.

Carbon filters can be of varying coarseness, to filter varying levels of contamination. The trade-off of finer filtration is flow, speed of filtration, and frequency of needing to change filter or media.

Carbon filtration is the primary method for removing chlorine and chloramine, which is added to municipal mains water as a disinfectant. The dosage varies by geographic region and can be varied daily, based on the quality of the source water. Removing chloramine and chlorine makes water more palatable – better drinking water, and fewer chemicals being consumed.

Carbon is used in:

  • Single-drinking water systems
  • Counter-top drinking systems
  • After sediment filtration in twin drinking water systems
  • As pre-filtration and final filtration in reverse osmosis drinking water systems, prior to membrane filtration and again, after the storage tank.
