UV & LED Disinfection
Rainwater, river water and bore water require disinfection to ensure the water is safe for use. UV and LED prove to be highly effective methods to render microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, yeasts and fungi harmless.
Water is commonly harvested from alternative sources for use as a supplementary or primary source of household water. It is a good method for reducing reliance on local water sources, reducing water bills, help prevent soil erosion and generally is a ‘green’ choice.
Alternative water sources may include rainwater, river water and bore water, which may be used for various indoor and outdoor applications. As an example, rainwater is commonly used in seaside areas or regional areas with good rainfall for homes, private holiday houses, AirBnBs and holiday accommodation.
Disinfection is primarily required in water treatment systems to remove water-borne disease, parasites and other pathogens from source water. Freshwater Systems has superior knowledge in water treatment and water disinfection.
Why is disinfection necessary in certain types of water?
Disinfection is particularly necessary when water is being used for drinking or consumption, from sources such as rainwater, bore water or even water storage tanks.
Without disinfection, however, there is a risk of serious illness when untreated water is ingested.
There are various methods of disinfection, including dosage with common chemicals such as chlorine and chloramine. A common and safe method to disinfect without chemicals is with light treatment, which is used in both commercial applications and for home use.
Domestically, our products generally incorporate UV lamps for whole-house systems. LED is a durable, robust and efficient alternative for under-sink systems where lower flow rates are required.
How does UV & LED work?
Microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, yeasts and fungi are rendered harmless by UV and LED disinfection. In water filtration systems utilising this technology, filtered rainwater, bore water and rive water can be made safe to drink if the water flows through the UV or LED light at an appropriate rate.
UV disinfection is an essential stage of rainwater purification that typically occurs as the final step of treatment. UV purifiers subject light to waves of ultraviolet light that penetrate microorganisms’ cell walls to prevent them from reproducing. This renders bacteria and viruses in the water harmless for consumption.
