River Water

Surface water, such as that from rivers, may be contaminated by animal and human wastes, chemicals and runoff. Algae blooms are also common, due to high nitrates from irrigation runoff. The most common methods of treatment for river water is to filter, clarify and disinfect. Filtration, ultrafiltration, activated carbon filtration, chemical dosing and UV disinfection are methods used to treat river water, to make water safe for reuse.
River water is not recommended as a source of potable water unless filtered and disinfected. Reverse osmosis is recommended for the purest drinking water, utilising membrane technology to remove the highest amount of contamination. A combination of filtration methods and disinfection are alternatives to reverse osmosis.
