Types of domestic water filter systems available

Are you looking for a water filtration system for your home and just want the basics on what systems are available? We’ve taken the guess work out of finding out the basics, which is a good starting point for your search. In a nutshell, here are the basic options available in domestic home filtration. Short and sweet…

Domestic Filter Systems available on the market generally fall into two categories:

  1. Single tap/outlet systems
  1. Whole house systems (sometimes called complete home filtration systems)
    • Single-, twin- and multi-filter systems, including carbon filtration
    • UV treatment
    • Domestic water softening systems
    • Reverse osmosis systems (however these are rarely used in whole-home treatment, often deemed to be prohibitively expensive)

Water filtration and treatment types include:

  • Sediment filtration – pleated or polyspun, for larger particles
  • Carbon filtration – for chlorine removal, taste and odour
  • Membrane (reverse osmosis) – for almost 100% of contaminants, such as chemicals, heavy metals, cysts, bacteria, viruses, algae, fungi, scale
  • UV or LED disinfection/sterilising – for microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, algae, fungi
  • Water Softening – to replace ions that make water hard
  • Remineralising – to add calcium, magnesium or sodium
  • pH altering – in domestic systems, this is usually to alkalinise drinking water
